Hey, y’all. I’ve been looking forward to introducing you to this guy for some time. This is Devere Kiernan, or Dev for short, one of the two protagonists in LITTLE RED AND THE SURLY BEAR. He’s the surly bear if you hadn’t guessed.

I love this guy. We’ve gotten close.

Screen shot 2011-08-06 at 5.06.14 PM.png

Alisha: Good morning, Dev. Thanks for joining me. It’s nice to see you again.

Devere: The pleasure is mine. I’m glad the circumstances are much better this time.

Alisha: Me, too! Last time got a little bloody. It’s hard to get out cotton?

Devere: I’m afraid that I do. The trick is cold water.

Alisha: Oh, well, that’s helpful. I’ll remember it for next time.

Devere: That’s likely.

Alisha: All right, let’s get into this, yeah? I know you are close with your family. Can you tell me about them?

Devere: I am. It’s just my sister, my nephew, and myself now. Maddy, my sister, likes to pretend she’s my mother. My nephew, Theo, thinks it’s funny. And I’m the reason they have to move all the time, but we’ve been a tight-knit pack for hundreds of years, especially after our parents died.

Alisha: Can you tell me about your parents?

Devere: My father was a good man. Strong and brave. He protected us when we needed help and let us fall when we needed a lesson. He stood up for others and taught me to do the same. My mother was much the same, but she was more meticulous and far better with a weapon than the rest of us. She taught me how to throw knives during puberty—gave me a reason to like being in my human form.

Alisha: How would you describe your childhood?

Devere: Peaceful. We traveled a lot, lived in the woods. My twin and I were playful. I loved France and scavenging human food across the country. The French have quite the palette.

Alisha: Where is the favorite place you’ve lived?

Devere: Other than France? Hmm. I liked the beer in Germany, the wine in Italy, the chocolate in Switzerland. But I like what they now call the Peneda-Geres National Park in Portugal.

Alisha: If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?

Devere: I’d let others take more risks for me.

Alisha: How do you feel about lying?

Devere: It proves valuable to keep people safe, but I am not a fan of it in general. I do it far more often than I like.

Alisha: Do you have a motto? If so, what is it?

Devere: Help others when you can.

Alisha: What do you like to do when you’re not working?

Devere: I prefer to spend my free time romancing the fairer sex. One night and woman at a time. I also like to make weapons. Knives.

Alisha: Do you have a criminal record?

Devere: Not in this country nor this century.

Alisha: Are you a pessimist or an optimist?

Devere: An optimistic pessimist. Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst.

Alisha: Do you believe in soul mates and/or true love?

Devere: I do. My parents had it, but I don’t think I’ll be lucky enough to have that in my life.

Alisha: Well, that’s it. Thank you again for taking the time to visit with me. I hope only a mild sense of danger awaits you.

Devere: Since danger certainly awaits me?

Alisha: Call it a hunch.

Well, y’all, that’s Dev. He made a cameo in LOVING RED, but now, he’s finally got his own voice in the story. Expect to see more of him in the last installment, LOVING THEM BOTH, coming in early 2021.

See him in action in my newest release, LITTLE RED AND THE SURLY BEAR.

When I originally published LOVING RED in 2015, I had a lot of promos and interviews for its launch. In that time, some of them have disappeared from the internets, but I did one interview in particular that went beyond the norm of why I write and what my book is about.

Since the host is gone, I’m reposting the thoughtful questions Cindy from BookAbout asked me below. And just before the prequel launches seemed like the time.

I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

I’m fascinated by the names and labels you’ve used in your story. Was there a particular theme/process/inspiration to your choices? (Celampresians /Assetato / Kaia / Severins Bouvier / Ari)

I had various reasons for the odd names I chose. First, the Celampresians are named after the queen of the vampires, the first one in existence: Phea Celampresian. She’s vain, so she named her army after herself. I chose it after some research about Atlantis and what type of surnames may have come from their culture. “Celam-” means the noble, and Phea was part of Atlantean nobility as her stepfather held a high-ranking government position. This also plays into her heritage: she was born of an Atlantean human woman impregnated by the primordial god, Chronos; therefore, making Phea the granddaughter of the Earth Goddess, Gaia. I infuse this mythology in her story, “Maiden of the Underworld.” In any case, I’m going off on a tangent, as I do. The second part of the name, “presian,” came from my tweaking two other names: Ampheresian, which means unsophisticated, hardy, and enduring, and Diaprepesian, which means ambitious, untrustworthy, and sly, all of which describe Phea’s personality not long after she becomes a vampire.

Second, the Assetato have a bit simpler of a back-story. I knew that Rosalie, the head of the Assetato, was Italian royalty before she was stolen and changed by one of the Celampresians. Once she freed herself from their reign, she banded with important allies and founded the organization in order to undermine Phea’s hold on the paranormal world so that vampires, shifters, and humans can live together. Simply put, I named them the Italian translation for “The Thirsty,” as they work not to kill humans in order to survive.

Next, Kaia and Severins are a bit different. These are characters that began as role-play characters on facebook. Kaia was not my own character, but I met her through a Sherrilyn Kenyon character: Dev. I loved playing him because he was a pervert, and well, so am I. They fell in love off screen, and so I made her a version of him that they could play on screen, hence the similar nickname of Sev. His name is made up of two French surnames, and other than the potential nickname, the meaning didn’t play into my choice for him. His surname, Bouvier, means herder, which seemed fitting for a wolf in the French countryside.

As for Kaia, like I said, she wasn’t originally my character, which created a whole different set of problems for me, but my friend tells me she chose it because she always liked the name, and I found that it means pure, which works well for her overall temperament. (I’ve written an explanation of their creation story on my blog.)

Lastly, Ari, who’s my main character’s best friend from the Blood Phoenix novels and finally has her own starring role in UNTAMED, is a shortened version of Ariana. I chose this name simply by asking my best friend what she would like her character to be named, since Ari is based off my oldest childhood friend, Becky. We’ve known each other for twenty-eight years now (and I’m thirty). I also liked it because it has the same three letters as my lead vampire, Ria. It connects them all the more.

Who/what are the Celampresians and the Assetato?

I explained a little about this above, but to simplify the explanation: the Celampresians are the bad guys, an evil coalition that aims to kill off most of the shifter races because Phea wants all paranormal creatures under her control. This stems from her birth as the first paranormal creature, the mother of all vampires and the grandmother of all shifters.

The Assetato are supposed to be the good guys, but their means of fighting don’t always seem so pure. They combat Phea’s control over them and want to live more peacefully, although they do battle their natural impulses to consume human blood and flesh. Although they are mostly good-doers in the U.S., they are more aggressive in Europe, as I will explore in an upcoming spin-off novel THE SISTER WITH THE STOLEN POCKET WATCH about a mermaid-unicorn, but that’s a whole new tangent.

Are the shifter’s names linked to their alter ego?

Unfortunately, they’re not. I typically pick names that I like and run with that. I have a list of a few hundred names I pull them from. Not a very fun or interesting answer, I know. But I also don’t believe that my shifters change personalities when they change forms. They merely need to learn to balance their animal instincts and impulses with their humanity.

Your use of other were-animals is appreciated. Most shifter storylines tend to focus on wolves, but there are some authors who will utilise other animals (Laurell K. Hamilton is the one that comes to my mind). Was there a reason for the direction you chose in this regard? What do you think the various shifters offer to the novel?

Thank you. I enjoy novels that show variety as well. I’ve read several of Hamilton’s novels and Kenyon’s, who does the same with her shifters. I’m fascinated with how diverse creatures are in mythology. I’m such a geek about it that I own two encyclopedias on the history, lore, and use of both vampires and shifters in culture, media, and literature. (I’m looking at some faerie ones as well).

Essentially, I get bored with the same thing over and over again, so I wanted to incorporate a bit of variety in my novels. My husband tells me that I add too much weird variances and that I’m pushing mythology a bit too far, and that’s what I’m aiming to do—push it, tweak it, twist it. Besides, I can do a whole lot more fun and strange stuff with more creatures.

I do talk a little about what’s present in their world in LOVING RED with my tree nymph, Eilon. But there’s a whole back-story for where they come from that will show itself slowly. It revolves around Phea and her son, Romulus, or as she calls him: Mumu.

What is significant or different about your shifters?

It’s a bit hard to say what makes mine different as shifters have been written about so much as of late. I’ve taken aspects from other stories and combined them into my creatures, like their abilities and aversion to silver. I do have an interesting phenomenon beginning when my series takes place, nine thousand years after paranormal creatures appear. They’re beginning to mutate, and hybrids, although rare, are a new possibility.

What I can say is different about Sev is his personality—how his wolf makes him both stronger and weaker. He’s certainly not indestructible, and he’s suffered a lot, but his motto throughout the novel empowers him: it can always be worse.

In this sense, my shifters are like regular people who have lived through extraordinary times, like the plague, the witch trials, and war.

What other animals have you incorporated into Loving Red?

I have wolves, bears, a hawk, various felines (leopard, lion, and a tiger), and one could make the argument for shifter fae. Eilon’s form changes, although he’s humanoid in shape in both forms. And I have other animals that will show up in later novels.

You use the term “shifter” instead of “were”… is there a reason for that? Elaborate?

I use the term shifter because were seems to have the connotation of a curse or having once been human. Although humans can be changed into shifters, or bosex as I call them in the books, it is far less common than the natural born shifters. I like this term because, like Sev, most of them are born in litters to families and stay in their animal form until they hit puberty. This can be dangerous for the larger creatures I have, like the centaur, unicorn, or dragon, but this can also create a safe environment for the young shifters until they’ve learned to navigate the world and care for themselves. When they’re old enough, they shift to their human form for the first time, therefore, shifting theirs and others’ perceptions.

Also, they’re not regulated by the moon or summoned to their animal forms because of it, which seems to fit more with the idea of a were-creature rather than a shifter.

And as a final tangent, I call them bosex in the novels for two reasons: first, bosex was an interesting typo in a conversation I had with the “real” Kaia, and I felt compelled to use it; second, we’ve invented the words were, shifter, and etc., and I like the idea that they had their own word for themselves long before humans had one.

You said… “like Sev, most of them are born in litters to families and stay in their animal form until they hit puberty.” This is fascinating! Would you mind elaborating on the social and emotional impacts this has on the shifters as they join the human race? Do they join the human race?

Thank you. I would love to elaborate. As with most of my answers, I have to say again that it varies. Sev had a hard time joining the human race. Since his pack was hit with disease in his youth, he was small as a new human and lacked the knowledge to immerse himself safely into the Middle Ages and the Catholic Inquisitions. His sometimes-horrific experiences with humanity personify his motto of “It could always be worse” or “I’ve been through worse.” However, because of this and other struggles, his family and pack remains close and stable as a unit, full of that special love that withstands the adaptation needed to survive for centuries. This also means that families like Sev’s will do anything to protect each other because family becomes their only constant as human culture changes around them.

For other creatures, the challenges are different. My centaur, for example, fell into reading and academia when he joined humanity, allowing him a quiet place to observe and learn how to fit in without truly being noticed. He did this to survive as so many of his kind were killed off before biology allowed him to change. This is true for many of my larger creatures, most of which are close to extinction and are seen as “mythical” even to other paranormal creatures.

And finally, my mermaids, who are isolated from humanity, have more to fear when they emerge from the water as humans. One of the families I focus on in THE SISTER WITH THE STOLEN POCKET WATCH demonizes humanity as the father was wiled away from his wife and produced one of the two hybrids I currently have in my mythology. The hybrid disrupts the family and clan dynamic in this pocket of the water, and she suffers for what she is. This means escorted visits on land for their first change and banning visits other than for mating purposes, which they do in their human forms.

All shifters possess an inherent fear of the human race, especially since their animal-counterparts are hunted, much like with the wolves in the U.S. or sharks in the Pacific. Most out grow their fear and learn to blend in, some feel more at home with humanity than they do with their own kind, and a select few hide themselves away to become as archaic as their mythologies depict them.

There it is. I still love all of those questions!

The prequel, LITTLE RED AND THE SURLY BEAR, comes out June 15th, and we’re having a release party where you can win the books, other paranormal books, and a grand prize with an Amazon gift card and character-themed candies! I hope you’ll join me there.

Hey, y’all. Ready to meet a newish character from my Broken World series, Kalib Ganesh, Assetato agent.

img_23878569129522

Alisha: Thank you for coming to meet with me today, Kalib. I know you’re busy, and I appreciate your time.

Kalib: It’s no problem, sweets. I take any chance I can to fraternize with pretty ladies.

Alisha: Oh, you flirt. I’m happily married.

Kalib: Innocent fun is nothing to feel shame over. I will not keep you from your questions. <He gestured with a handroll for me to go ahead.>

Alisha: Good. I feel better focusing on you rather than me. So, first question: What’s in your fridge right now?

Kalib: At home, most of what haunts my frivolously empty kitchen is alcohol and coffee, so a half-empty carton of milk and a few bottles of wine? No blood or other gore like movies tend to depict. Unless the house keeper stashed some away on there.

Alisha: Coffee and wine. I get on board with that.

Kalib: I am a man of excellent taste.

Alisha: What is your most marked characteristic?

Kalib: Why, my charisma, of course. I can charm my way into or out of nearly any situation, especially when sexual prowess is at stake, sweets. I have quite the collection of undergarments.

Alisha: Good to know. Not one of my questions though.

Kalib: It felt like a fitting answer to me.

Alisha: I’m sure. What was your life like before you became a vampire?

Kalib: I was the son of a politician, anointed into the Order of the Star in India. We lived well and worked hard. We were proud of where we came from and what we worked toward.

Alisha: It’s nice to have conviction. What is the most beautiful thing you have ever seen?

Kalib: As I’m sure you wouldn’t appreciate if I told you about this young thing I found in northern India just after my transformation, I would have to say Hoggenakal Falls in South India. It’s breathtaking and invigorated with power.

Alisha: I have found water and earth in such force has enormous emotional effects. What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Kalib: A good bottle of wine, pale legs and blonde hair spread across my sheets…

Alisha: Speaking of pale and blonde, tell me what’s going on there between you and Maddy?

Kalib: A gentleman does not kiss and tell about a lady.

Alisha: You have done nothing but.

Kalib: Vague details that do not pinpoint anyone. I can paint quite the picture without offense.

Alisha: If you say so. Do you believe in love at first sight?

Kalib: Absolutely, but it rarely lasts longer than a couple of days at most. At least, in my experience.

Alisha: What is your weapon of choice and do not make any phallic references is you please.

Kalib: I am a fan of the sword, and I have dabbled quite a bit in throwing stars, but I prefer my powers of persuasion. <Smoke lifted off of him, sweet and dirty all at once.> It’s quite a helpful tool.

Alisha: That’s one I haven’t seen before. How does it work?

Kalib: I must simply want something badly enough, and I make it mine.

Alisha: I hope you don’t take that power lightly. What is your favorite proverb?

Kalib: “It is better to see something once than to hear about it a thousand times.”

Alisha: I like that. Last one, when did you last make a promise?

Kalib: Mere months ago, to a woman who deserves much more than I can promise, but I offer nothing more than I can deliver.

Alisha: Back to those cryptic details, huh?

Kalib: I believe you are out of questions, sweets.

Alisha: That I am and time. Thank you again for taking a couple of minutes to sit and talk with me today, or it might be better to say flirt with me, but I’m sure that’s nothing personal.

Kalib: Oh, no. Not at all.

Well, everyone, that is Kalib, he’s made a few cameos in a few stories so far, and I can’t wait for you all to keep learning more about him with me.

Want to see him in action? Take a look at LOVING RED, THE MARK OF THE PHOENIX, and LITTLE RED & THE SURLY BEAR, coming this June!

Hey, y’all. Time for a character interview with the mythological, Adomous. He tends to be infuriatingly high and mighty, so let’s see if we make it through this with all our skin.

223290_513896158662119_1772205650_n.jpg

Me: Hi, Adam. Thank you for coming in and answering some questions today.

Adam: I’d say that I try to be helpful, but I don’t want to earn the wrong kind of reputation. Then, the old cronies crawl out of the woodwork to ask for something, and I’m trapped.

Me: Don’t worry, I won’t expose your secret. Let’s jump in. Yeah? What’s in your refrigerator right now?

Adam: Wine and leftovers—coconut curry over rice, more specifically. And creamer. For my coffee in the morning.

Me: That’s it? Really?

Adam: At the moment. The wine does take up quite a bit of space.

Me: Okay. What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Adam: Crawling out from under the old G.O.D. It took millennia, but it is certainly the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.

Me: G.O.D.?

Adam: It’s a title, sweetie. And that’s all I can say to someone with your clearance level.

Me: I’m pretty sure I have…

Adam: You don’t.

Me: What is your most treasured possession?

Adam: Something I treasure enough to not reveal what it is. That way, no one can use it as leverage against me.

Me: Why do I feel like I’m talking to Evan again?

Adam: Because you have a death wish?

Me: When and where were you the happiest?

Adam: When I was in the Garden of Eden with Lilith—before she was banished.

Me: Not with Eve?

Adam: I enjoyed spending time with Eve, too, but it wasn’t the same.

Me: What do you most dislike?

Adam: Why evil, of course. It is my job to enforce morality.

Me: How do you feel about your new charge, Lilith Graves?

Adam: I don’t think I can provide a sigh deep enough or long enough to express just how I feel about that young lady. She’s insubordinate and bull-headed. Eternally frustrating with a heart too big. She’ll get herself hurt.

Me: Why did you agree to take the job? There’re hints that you work with her mother?

Adam: I do and have for a long time. She made me what I am, and her trust in me is why I train Lily. I took the job as a favor. To protect her.

Me: Good answer.

All right, Adam might be a bit sour, but I have a feeling there’s a good heart hidden in there somewhere. I hope you get to know him better in THE GIRL WITH THE GLOWING HAIR.

balance and felxibility, creative genius, imitators, Paranormal high school, starr black, strong female characters, The Girl with the Glowing Hair, The Lily Graves Series, The Wizard of Oz, total babes

Hey, y’all. Time for a character interview with the fabulous Starr Black. She doesn’t need much in the way of introductions, so let’s just jump in.

39036b0915a97970961ae33e6b6864df.jpg

Me: Hi, Starr. It’s wonderful to see you again.

Starr: Thanks, girl. Always fabulous to be here. You can invite me over any time.

Me: Oh, you’re delightful. Okay, let’s kick this off with one of the basics. Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

Starr: Gladly. I am a strong-ass female that likes to kick ass and trend set at the same time. I’m fiercely competitive but compassionate—mostly because I’m the eldest of five. Most importantly, I’m a witch with some grand-standing new wave ideas that are going to change to the world of magic. Not so importantly…I’m the heir to a prestigious lineage. And the pressure’s not what gets to me, it’s conforming to their traditions that gives me serious hives.

Me: What kind of new wave ideas are we talking about?

Starr: Well, patent pending, I weave spells into artwork. I may even be planning a graphic novel spell book, but I can’t spill too many details. All those sneaky imitators waiting to swoop in on my genius. Not happening.

Me: Smart thinking. You mentioned having younger siblings. Any pets?

Starr: Oh no. No, no, no. The twins are more than enough. We don’t need any more animals running around the house.

Me: Do you work out or are you a coach potato?

Starr: Oh, I get my yoga on. Balance and flexibility have so many health benefits. And other benefits. I’m working on my handstands.

Me: I can see balance and flexibility coming in handy with how busy you are, especially with the new add-ons to your friends list.

Starr:  Hmm, well, I don’t know how much a friend Evan is, but he’s not as bad as I thought he was before. Maybe more of an ally. Or neutral. We’ll see. But Lily has made my life so much more exciting. It’s nice to interact with someone who’s not hanging out with me to climb the social ladder or looking to steal some of my true fabulousness. Let me tell you, that’s a struggle. I don’t know. Lily’s got the whole own your awkward thing going on, and it works for her. Plus, have you seen her wonder twin guardians? An FBI agent with all sorts of pull and intimidation tactics and steeliness. And an uber smart geneticist who becomes Mr. Mom when he comes home. Have you tried his baklava? Girl. Please. Plus, they’re both total babes.

Me: I wonder how Lily would react to you calling her father and uncle babes.

Starr: She’d probably just shake her head at me. Because I only have two speeds, full and off.

Me: I can see that.

Starr: It’s more than okay to bask in my glory. It’s free until eight.

Me: What’s your plan for after high school?

Starr: Sassy Sister Sidekick Consultant with the REPpers? No, well, yes, that, but I want to teach kids how to develop their magic. Be the mentor I’d always wanted.

Me: You mentioned having an issue with conforming to traditions, does that play a role?

Starr: I think you already know the answer to that. Don’t get me wrong, my family is supportive and loving and all of that, but no one took the way I practiced seriously until I made them. Until I started teaching it to other people. But I don’t just want to teach my way. I want them to experiment until they find what’s right for them.

Me: I respect that. What’s the best way to get on your good side?

Starr: Bring your best to the table. We all have amazing things inside us. So unleash it or get the hell out of the way.

Me: Easiest way to get on your bad side?

Starr: Lie to me. About anything. It’s disrespectful.

Me: What movies do you absolutely hate?

Starr: Ugh. The Wizard of Oz.

Me: Because of the green skin, long nose, and wart?

Starr: Girl, don’t even get me started with that shit.

Me: And who is your celebrity crush?

Starr: Sam Rockwell. I just saw him in Mr. Right with Anna Kendrick. So cute. Funny. Crazy. Sexy.

Me: I’m noticing a trend here, Starr. Should I be worried?

Starr: You can, but it wouldn’t do you much good.

Me: I think it’s time to end this before we stir up any misinterpretation or accusations.

Starr: I think you might be right.

Me: Thank you, Starr, for joining me today. Help yourself to some more coffee, and I have pie on the counter.

Well, y’all, Starr may be a bit flamboyant, but I hope that doesn’t dissuade you from getting to know her better in THE GIRL WITH THE GLOWING HAIR.

Hey, y’all. Time for a character interview with the infamous, Evan Walker. He’s a bit of a tough one, especially for a fifteen-year-old, so let’s see what we can get out of him.

3595aa9f69245eaff1e5faa581f614c8--guy-haircuts-guy-outfits

Me: Hi, Evan, Thanks for joining me today.

Evan: Yeah. Sure. They’re counting this as a part of my community service, so whatever.

Me: Community service? What for?

Evan: I have a propensity for using fire in ways that get out of hand. Sometimes. Allegedly.

Me: I see. It seems you have more than fire in your arsenal. At least, according to your file.

Evan: Did Lily give you that? More to be said than what’s officially on paper. Not that anyone really cares what really happened, so long as someone has been punished for the inconvenience.

Me: I plead the fifth on the file, so why don’t we get into it.

Evan: Whenever you’re ready.

Me: Do you have any pets?

Evan: Just Moon, my end-of-the-year project. I’m still working on Mom to let me build her a habitat in the backyard, but for some reason, she’s not happy with the thought of a dragon nest so close to the house. Not after what happened at school.

Me: What happened at school?

Evan: You have my file.

Me: That wasn’t in your file.

Evan: Too bad for you, then, huh?

Me: Do you put both socks on first, or one sock, one shoe?

Evan: Both socks first. I’m not a monster.

Me: If you could cure one disease, which one would you cure?

Evan: Ignorance.

Me: I don’t know if you could consider that a disease.

Evan: It is.

Me: How do you feel about two new additions to your friends list?

Evan: Lily’s good. She’s quick and not afraid to go toe-to-toe with others. I’ve got respect for that. But Starr isn’t my friend. She’s Lily’s friend. Just so we’re clear.

Me: What do you hope to do after high school?

Evan: Move out of my parents’ house.

Me: How will you do that? Got a job in mind? College?

Evan: I’ve considered giving college a try, but I’ve heard it’s not for smart people. Regardless, I’ll probably keep dabbling in Alchemy and animals.

Me: Is there a job out there that combines the two?

Evan: If there isn’t, I’ll make one.

Me: Ambitious. I like it. What do you care about most in the world?

Evan: Right. I tell you that, and people will be holding it against me for the rest of my life. Not happening.

Me: Fair enough. Didn’t think of it that way. What’s the easiest way to annoy you?

Evan: Conjecture. I hate when I say I don’t know something, and people keep offering suggestions or explanations anyways. If you don’t know for sure, shut your mouth.

Me: And what the best way of cheering you up?

Evan: A chocolate malt and silence.

Me: All right. Nice and concise, Evan. I appreciate you spending time with me today.

Evan: Sure. I need you to sign off on my service hour.

Me: Can do.

Well, y’all, Evan may not be the revealing or chatty type, but I hope that doesn’t dissuade you from getting to know him better in THE GIRL WITH THE GLOWING HAIR, last chance to get that 25% discount at the Transmundane Press store!

TheBorn to Love Wild authors all came together to answer some questions about their stories for the anthology. Here, four of the authors interview their characters with the same set of five questions.

Andie Biagini – “Water Temperature”
An engineering student and a cryptozoologist. One of them can talk to sea monsters, but it’s not who you think.

What did you do on summer vacations as a child?

Madison: My family spent as many days at the beach as we could. I’ve always been drawn to the ocean.

What do you like best about your partner, physically, and why?

Madison: Luis has the most gorgeous brown eyes. They’re the color of sea glass.

What drives you crazy about your partner, and why?

Madison: He gets bossy when he thinks he knows what’s best for me. We’re working on it.

If you were offered an obscene amount of money, what would you do with it? Why?

Madison: I would pay off my student loans, donate to a marine conservation organization, and then go on some really fabulous vacations. There are so many beaches I haven’t been to yet.

What’s next for you and your partner?

Madison: He’s working and I have my internship, but we have the rest of the summer to see where things go.

Bigelow – “Focal Point”

Sometimes a wizard from Sweden needs help from a medium from Michigan.

What did you do on summer vacations as a child?

Faas: I learned how to use my abilities from my grandparents and helped them on their farm.

Elizabeth: I played with other kids in the woods. I didn’t realize they were spirits until later when I tried to introduce one to my mom and she couldn’t see him.

What do you like best about your partner, physically, and why?

Faas: Everything. But, if I had to pick one thing, it would be her behind. I love watching her walk.

Elizabeth: His eyes. Faas looks at me so intensely as if I’m the only one and there’s nothing outside of us.

Faas: Because there isn’t.

Elizabeth: Hush. (Said with a smile)

What drives you crazy about your partner, and why?

Faas: The way she treats everyone and everything with kindness until they prove her wrong. There aren’t many humans like that.

Elizabeth: He can be snarky, but when the time comes for him to work, he’s serious.

If you were offered an obscene amount of money, what would you do with it? Why?

Faas: I’d give it to research for cancer. Too many people die of this disease and it can’t be cured with magic.

Elizabeth: I’d put it into art programs in Michigan. I think being creative is an outlet for what bothers a person. There’s a point in the process of making something, no matter what it is, where you fall into the art itself and the outside world disappears…Metaphorically.

What’s next for you and your partner?

Faas: Figuring how to stay together.

Elizabeth: We’re sticking together. We just need to iron out the details. Any relationship takes a lot of work, but we’re willing to put in the effort.

Faas: We’ll do well. We started out as friends and having that foundation helps.

Elizabeth: That doesn’t mean we won’t fight or get angry, but we know what’s at stake. We’ll find a way.

M.T. DeSantis – “Forever Love”

To find a chance… A chance to find…

What did you do on summer vacations as a child? (Or, if not applicable, what’s your favorite thing about summer?)

Karli: I mostly kept to myself. I’d hang out in my room or the basement and listen to music while drawing or coloring. It sounds lonely, but I enjoyed it.

Ellowyn: Is “summer vacation” a human concept? Since the fae have no such thing, I shall say that my favorite thing about summer is the warmth of the nights. I can lie naked beneath the sky and not be bothered by a chill upon my skin.

What do you like best about your partner, physically, and why?

Karli: Ellowyn’s contrast of color just draws me to her. Her ebony skin and silvery-white hair are so alluring.

Ellowyn: Karli’s shapely bosom is my favorite part of her physical appearance. They both arouse me and provide a place to rest my head when I require comfort.

What drives you crazy about your partner, and why?

Karli: Ellowyn occasionally has a grudging streak. Maybe it’s a fae thing. Living forever probably messes with your emotions. I guess I’ll find out.

Ellowyn: Karli thinks of life in human terms. She will rush to do something, and I must gently remind her that we have eternity. Fortunately, she does not rush when we are together, if my meaning is clear.

If you were offered an obscene amount of money, what would you do with it? Why?

Karli: I would build a shrine to the fae dance in the mortal world. Such beauty should be shared with everyone.

Ellowyn: The fae have no use for money. Though, I suppose purchasing a following of devoted humans to perform my every whim holds some appeal.

What’s next for you and your partner?

Karli: I am going to get used to my new existence. My life has changed so much since I met Ellowyn, and I’m excited to explore everything this life has to offer.

Ellowyn: Next and forever, I will be at Karli’s side. She is my forever love.

Traci Douglass – “Blood Strong: A Blood Ravagers Novella”

One guardian demon in love. One witch with a secret crush. One evil threatening their newfound connection.

What did you do on summer vacations as a child?

Spud: Dad used to take mom and I out into the Big Horn mountains for cookouts.

Emma: I remember to Summer Solstice celebrations in Nantucket, before we moved to Wyoming. So much fun.

What do you like best about your partner, physically, and why?

Spud: (looks over at Emma beside him) You mean beside the fact she’s the most beautiful woman in the world?

Emma: (blushes then kisses Spud) Aw. You are so sweet. There are so many things I love about Spud. His strength. The sexy little horns on his head. But most of all I love his huge heart.

What drives you crazy about your partner, and why?

Spud: (holds up his hands and shakes his head) Nope. Not going there. Nope, nope, nope.

Emma: (laughs, elbowing him in the side) C’mon. I won’t get mad. Promise. I’ll tell you what drives me nuts about him. His sense of decency. He’s always worried about what other people are going to think. Will they be offended? Should I say this? How can I make them more comfortable around me? Be who you are, I say. Let them adjust.

Spud: (snorts) Well, I guess she can be kind of mouthy sometimes.

Emma: Hey! I am not mouthy. I speak my mind, that’s all.

Spud: Mouthy.

Emma: (crosses arms) So you’ve got a problem with my attitude then?

Spud: I thought you said you wouldn’t get mad?

(interview pauses as bickering commences)

If you were offered an obscene amount of money, what would you do with it? Why?

Spud: (runs a hand through his shoulder length brown hair, sighing) Right now? I’d try to buy back what I said a few minutes ago. At least then I’d have some peace and quiet.

Emma: (cheeks flushed and eyes sparkling with anger) Peace and quiet? (looks at interviewer) Seriously? See this is exactly what I’m talking about. If you feel a certain way, Spud, then own it. Don’t push your feelings aside and pretend they don’t exist to make me happy.

Spud: (lets his head fall back as he exhales slow) I love you Emma. I love everything about you. You are my soul mate, my bonded partner, my everything. When you’re happy, I’m happy. Period. The end. Is that enough realness for you?

Emma: (blinks at him, expression astonished) Uh… wow! I don’t know what to say.

Spud: (glances over at her and grins) How about a kiss then?

Emma: I thought you’d never ask.

What’s next for you and your partner?

(No answer, as Emma straddles Spud on his chair and passionate making out commences. Interviewer quietly leaves the room.).

Interview with Fannar Einarsson: the IMP

SF_GQSTYLEUK_FW08_05

Welcome, Fannar. Thank you for coming in to answer some questions.

A pleasure. I live to serve.

Not used to that one, but I’m still glad to have you here. I hear you have an interesting power that takes a hefty toll.

Indeed. The manipulation of elements can be quite draining. I freeze water. It, in turn, freezes me. It wasn’t always that way, bit it is now.

A birdie told me that you and your brother have a bit of a feud. Can you tell me about that?

He’s the reason my powers hurt me as much as they do. Because he skirted his responsibilities and needed someone to save him.

What role do you play in the council?

I run the Northern Division of the Internal Magick Protection units. Checks and balances. Ensuring protocol is not only followed but fair.

Did you always want to be a part of the council?

<He laughs.> No. I messed up pretty badly when I was younger…had a lot of making up to do.

I hear you have an interesting collection, what’s it of?

You hear a lot of things.

I do. It’s like a magickal power.

I have a couple thousand preserved snowflakes. It’s a bit of a niche, took a lot of practice to perfect, but it helps to channel our most basic natures.

Can you tell me about Alvilda?

She was special, but she had a self-destruct button. Too much energy to contain. <Emotions warred through his face.> She changed the way our mound runs now, about what we prioritize, about how we teach our children.

I’m glad to hear she has a legacy.

Me, too.

What was the first bit of magick you learned?

Keeping my food from burning my mouth. Took a long time before I got to eat warm food again.

Samurai or Ninja?

Ninja. It’s better to be fast than strong, and every fairy will tell you the same.

If you could change something about yourself, what would it be and why?

I’d be able to feel warmth again.

I hope you do, someday. Well, that’s it. Thanks for placating me, and I hope you come back to visit soon.

Will Waller, a Featured Spotlight

If you haven’t heard of my new project, the On Fire anthology over at Transmundane Press, this mini-interview and excerpt series will showcase the amazing authors I get to work with and their writing. Meet Will Waller.

Banner 3

What do you find to be the easiest thing about writing? What is the hardest?

By far the easiest thing for me to do is come up with premises for stories to write. The hardest… I don’t know if difficult is really the operative concern, but my biggest fault as a writer is being too easily satisfied. Since I have so many premises, when I finish drafting and editing one, I want to be done. So, sometimes I’m too easily satisfied. Unfortunately, good writing rarely works like that.

What did you edit out of this story?

The mean-spirited parts.

What are you doing to market yourself?

I’m not, really. The audience I have I have because I’m mouthy and opinionated, and because I’ve been part of a few different publications, including The Fantasist Magazine, which I founded and still run with my fiancé. I’ve always been strange, I think, in that I don’t really enjoy talking about my own writing. Working in publishing gives me something else to talk about at the bar at a con, or any other context, really. If that helps me market myself, and I’m not sure it does, it’s really only because people remember me as the odd young person not trying to tell everyone who will listen about his novel.

From “Torch” by Will Waller

This is the story of Stingy Jack:

You’re a blacksmith in a small Irish town. You’re a gigantic fucking asshole, so naturally people try to kill you, but this is a fairy tale, so even with an axe in your back, you get to bargain with the Devil while you both get a pint. You say, “I have a great idea,” and nothing good ever happens after that. There’s a thing with a coin and a plan to steal some souls, then a cross, and it all ends with you getting another year of life. You spend that year having an affair in a small town with a woman who doesn’t tell you she’s already pregnant. After she leaves, the Devil corners you under an apple tree, but you’re still not ready to let it go. Again with the crosses, but this time, you’re stupid. While he’s stuck in that tree, you make him swear to never take your soul. When you try to catch up with the woman, she tells you about her new baby girl. You’re supposed to act like the summer never happened. The pearly gates are closed. She doesn’t want you near her good china. So, you hit bottom and head to Hell to set up shop, but when you get there, the Devil laughs at you. He won’t let you in. You made him swear he wouldn’t, but he remembers your college days, and he has a sense of humor. He sticks some Hellfire in a turnip, so the burning smell can light your way while you wander. He says it’s to help, but the fire carries the memory of the summer, and the memory, with the smell, clings to every new relationship. You fall into old habits and become a shadow of yourself, but the only thing that people see is a hopeful, little light bobbing in a stinky mist. Other people mistake your light for guidance and lose themselves in a swamp they don’t see following your little light. Knowing you’re lost anyway, you wander west, chasing an old college friend, hoping he can set you right.

Will Waller is an author of speculative fiction, scholarship, and experimental writing originally from the Finger Lakes Wine Region of New York. After two years in San Francisco spent working as an editor for Eleven Eleven Journal, he relocated to St. Louis to found The Fantasist Magazine. His writing focuses on memory, music, and the weather, and has been featured by Bay Area Generations, Heavy Feather Review, Rivet Magazine, and the On Fire anthology of Transmundane Press.

Sean Padraic McCarthy, a Featured Spotlight

If you haven’t heard of my new project, the On Fire anthology over at Transmundane Press, this mini-interview and excerpt series will showcase the amazing authors I get to work with and their writing. Meet Sean Padraic McCarthy.

Banner 3

Are you a full-time author? If you have another job, what is it and would you like to become a full-time author if you could?

I’m not a full time author. I work in the mental health field as a human service coordinator. And yes, if I could support myself from writing, I would; although I would like to teach part time.

How do you deal with writer’s block?

I’m always working on at least a few stories—and usually a novel—at the same time, so if one stalls, I just jump to another. I also find that writer’s block is much more torturous when thinking about writing; once you go into your writer’s mind—with either pen on paper or fingers on the keyboard—the answers are usually more accessible.

Who is your favorite character in your current story and why?

Both Sophie and Kinsley.  I love Sophie’s heart and innocence, and I love Kinsley’s alertness, practicality and wisdom, and I love the way the two of them look out for each other.

From “A Solstice Memory” by Sean McCarthy

Inside the house the twins stood waiting for me. They’re not identical, but they look alike. Sophie has darker hair, a slightly lazy eye, and freckles on her nose. A little taller. Kinsley is more compact, and more assured. An athlete.

“Dad,” she said.

“Yeah?’

“That wasn’t a dead cat you were burying this morning.”

“What do you mean?”

She beckoned for me to follow her, and slid open the door onto the back covered deck. Cheryl has always kept the back deck looking nice. A bar, and our grill, a teak dining table. More hanging plants, and potted herbs. And on the side wall of the house hangs a collections of faces. Masks. One, wooden, is a tree spirit, a bearded face in the bark. One is Pan, painted dark green, leaves in his hair. One is a gray stone cherub. And one is from Haiti. A tear drop shaped, with a bone through the nose, eyes in panic, and the mouth locked open in scream. Wild strands of hair, standing on end. My brother-in-law, a sociologist, game me that one. He told me it is very old, and one of kind, probably worth a lot of money, so we probably shouldn’t hang it out here, free to steal, but Cheryl insisted we do, insisted we hang it with the others, so she didn’t have to look at it every day.

Kinsley was already down on the lawn. “Come on.”

I looked at Sophie.

“I’m not going down there,” she said. “Not again.”

Kinsley stopped some twenty feet from the shed, from the pet cemetery.

I caught up.

“Look.” She pointed.

But she didn’t have to.

The hand stuck up from the earth. Rotten and gray. The yellow finger nails clawed at the soil.

“He wants out, Dad,” Kinsley said.

“Well, let’s see if we can stop that.”

“You can’t be burying dead guys in the yard. Mom’s gonna get really mad.”

Sean Padraic McCarthy’s short stories have been published or are forthcoming in Glimmer Train, The Hopkins Review, The Indianola Review, South Dakota Review, The Sewanee Review, 2 Bridges Review, Prole, Water~Stone Review,  Hayden’s Ferry Review, Shadowgraph Magazine, Fifth Wednesday Journal, and South Dakota Review among others. His story “Better Man”–originally published in december magazine—was  listed as a “Distinguished Story”  in The Best American Short Stories 2015, he was recently named a finalist for the Gertrude Stein Award in Fiction, and he is a 2016 recipient of the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Artist Fellowship in Fiction Award.
